1955/55 1C Doubled Die MS65 Red PCGS. A blazing f
1955/55<1C> Doubled Die MS65 Red PCGS. A blazing fiery Gem example, and one of the finest we've seen or ever expect to see. The doubling at the date, at LIBERTY, and at IN GOD WE TRUST is about as bold as could be desired. The 1955 Double Die Obverse variety probably ranks as the single most celebrated doubled die error of the 20th century, and has been the subject of innumerable articles since the time it was minted back in 1955. The error was caused as a consequence of a change in the positioning of the hub with respect to the die after the die had already received at least one impression from the hub. Accordingly, when the die received a second impression from the hub, the date and obverse letters all became radically doubled. This ordinarily would have resulted in the obverse die being rejected from use, but the mint workers responsible for quality control failed to notice the error until several thousand impressions had already been produced from the dies. Although some numismatists noticed the new variety almost immediately, it took several years for the 1955 Doubled Die to capture the full attention of the numismatic community, and ever since that time, the variety has been esteemed and eagerly sought in all grades of condition. Unlike most pieces in the Lincoln cent series, which can be easily acquired in Gem Uncirculated condition, the 1955 Doubled Die is very elusive in the upper echelons of preservation. It appears that the vast majority of survivors had already entered into the channels of commerce before the collecting community was fully aware of the variety's existence, and hence only a small portion of those seen today grade above MS63, and many collectors have to be content with examples that are in the XF to AU range. Here's an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most important 20-century cent varieties in a grade of condition seldom available to the collecting community. Once this Gem crosses the auction block, when will there be another opportunity to acquire such a treasure? Population: 18 in 65, 0 finer (6/05).
