1952 5C Nickels--Split Planchet After Striking--XF40 P
1952<5C> Jefferson Nickels--Split Planchet After Striking--XF40 PCGS. An interesting pair. One can speculate about why the planchet split, perhaps it was faulty in that area, perhaps dirt or other debris clogged the planchet strip, etc. This type error is more frequently seen with clad coinage when the clad layer does not bond. That, of course, is not the case with a nickel, and such an error would be just as rare today as it was in 1952. It is curious that the pieces grade XF40, suggesting they may have been carried as pocket pieces for some time. Lightly toned with streaks of darker color around the margins.
