<B>1951 St. Louis Browns "Eddie Gaedel Game" Scorecard.</B></I> In Hall of Fame executive Bill Veeck's most famous stunt, he trotted out a three-foot seven-inch pinch hitter named Eddie Gaedel in the second game of an August 19, 1951 Browns doubleheader against the Tigers. After recovering from a bout a laughter at the absurdity of the situation, Detroit pitcher Bob Cain failed in four attempts to touch Gaedel's microscopic strike zone, and Gaedel took his base before being immediately removed for a pinch runner, ending his baseball career. Gaedel would later say that he had been warned by Veeck that a sniper was stationed in the stands with instructions to fire if the bat left his shoulder. Here we present one of the few surviving examples of that day's official scorecard, listing "Gaedel" as a roster player with the jersey number he wore to the left: "1/8." Despite obvious condition problems, most notably vertical center creasing and chipping at the corners, the tremendous appeal of this rarity cannot be denied. Perhaps no baseball artifact on earth could better remind us that baseball is first and foremost a game, and that it's supposed to be fun.
