Opalescent glass is made by melding two layers of glass, one colored and one clear. Once the layers are melded through heating and reheating several times in the glassmaking process, they become fused, and a milky color occurs to create an opalescent, or opaque, effect while still retaining a transparent color. It is this contrast of the milky against the transparent color that draws people to opalescent glass.<p>

Opalescent glass has been made since the 1880s in both America and Europe. Recognizable glassmakers include American Glass, Jefferson, Fostoria, Dugan and Northwood (both of whom also made carnival glass), Millersburg, of course, Fenton, and Davidson and Sowerby's of England. They all made gorgeous examples of opalescent glass which we treasure today.<p>

And, of course, the Italians, the progenitors of design, style, and technique in glassmaking, made opalescent glass. This example is a Murano-style piece in opalescent cranberry glass for which I still am researching the artist. Although it is Fenton-esque in its coloration, it is a much splashier, less-conformed style which may have parallels with the Fenton Leaf and Beads style--elongated.<p>

At its widest point, it is 11 3/8 inches, and, at its narrowest, 6 3/4 inches. It has a 2-inch base. It is pink inside with a milk glass layer and then a clear overlay. This combination of both glass-making technique and style attests to the advanced skill of the glassmaker. The free-from design shows a sun ray from the center. ...
