1950 Great Northern Railway Calendar Winold Reiss
Featured in this lot is an original 1950 Winold Reiss calendar from the Great Northern Railway, copyright 1949. The portrait title figure, "Tom Dawson, Mountain Man," lived in the region known as Glacier National Park in Northwestern Montana for over 50 years. He helped make the first survey of the park region and worked for the park's first superintendent, Major W. R. Logan, for whom Logan Pass is named. The story of Tom Dawson is found underneath the calendar pad. F. Winold Reiss was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. In 1920, he went West for the first time, working for months on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, painting 36 portraits of tribal members. Over the years Reiss painted more than 250 works depicting Native Americans. These paintings by Reiss became known more widely beginning in the 1920s to the 1950s, when the Great Northern Railway commissioned Reiss to do paintings of the Blackfeet which were then distributed widely as lithographed reproductions on Great Northern calendars. In 1931, and 1934-37, Reiss organized a summer art school, also referred to as an artists' colony near Glacier National Park. This calendar features the iconic ledger art imagery on left and right borders. Empire Builder Oriental Limited operated between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest via Glacier National Park, a route map is right below the portrait. The Empire Builder was the flagship passenger train of the Great Northern Railway (1889-1970), originally operating a steam powered service that was re-equipped in 1947 to a streamliner service; it was relaunched in 1971, when it was taken over by Amtrak and now runs daily intercity services between Chicago and Seattle and Portland. This calendar is in very nice overall condition, original top and bottom metal are still attached. Very slight edge scuffing noted. Age tanning noted throughout and very light foxing. Calendar months are December 1949 through December 1950. Original Great Northern Railway mailing tube included, original mailing label from a "district passenger agent" addressed to original owner still firmly affixed to tube with original cancelled US Mail 7 cents stamp affixed as well. This calendar is in good overall condition, age tanning noted. Slight scuffing exhibited along border edges, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 33"L x 16"W.
