Approximately 27 1/2"x 22". Condition as shown, see edges for tears. A pictorial map of Yellowstone National Park by Jo Mora, one of the most renown American mapmakers of this genre, which he referred to as "cartes." It exhibits his characteristic whimsical touch combined with geographic and historical detail. Numerous illustrations show locations of the park’s geological features, roads, and visitor services buildings such as ranger stations, inns and campgrounds. The map is enlivened by Mora’s characteristically playful illustrations of park wildlife, people participating in park activities, and Native Americans in traditional garb. Notwithstanding the cartoony drawing style of the figures, the topography of the park with its hills and canyons is faithfully rendered as if viewed from the air. Locations are labeled with hand-lettered captions, some on illustrations of signposts.
