1948 Loyalty Board Affidavit & Alger Hiss TLS
1948 Loyalty Board Affidavit and Alger Hiss Typed Letter Signed "Alger". An interesting collection from the days of the Communist witch hunts in the United States. First, a one page typed letter, 8" x 10.5", signed "Alger", on Carnegie Endowment for International Peace letterhead (of which Hiss was president), April 21, 1948, to Sigmund Timberg, Washington, D.C. in which the two men discuss matters relating to restrictive covenants and international law. A copy of Timberg's two page typed follow up to Hiss's questions is included. Timberg was a lawyer who was prominently employed in the post-war reconstruction of Europe. Apparently, either through his communications with Hiss or through other circumstances his loyalty was questioned and he was made to respond to the Department of Justice's Loyalty Board. Included with this remarkable archive is a copy of Timberg's sworn affidavit before the board. The seven page, 8" x 13" legal document with attached letters attesting to Timberg's loyalty make interesting reading. All items are in very good or better condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
