1947-D 50C MS67 NGC. The '47-D has a relatively low mintage (a little over 3.9 million pieces), but was heavily saved as the last year of the issue. MS64 and MS65 specimens are readily available, but higher graded pieces become quite elusive. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports indicate 38 pieces at the MS67 level, with none graded higher (1/05). Our own records are in general agreement, showing only 28 MS67 examples offered for sale by the major auction houses over the past seven years or so. We show no higher-graded pieces as having appeared. The present coin features splashes of burnt-orange and crimson on the obverse, and hints of olive-gray on the reverse. The design elements are relatively well struck up, with nice definition on Liberty's skirt lines, and at least partial definition in the left thumb area. Lustrous surfaces are well preserved, though a small luster graze is visible on Liberty's left breast. Population: 31 in 67, 0 finer (1/05). Lot:8212
