1946 5C--Struck on War Time Silver Planchet--Fine 12 PCGS. Deep silver-gray patina, with problem-free surfaces and good eye appeal for the grade. All legends are bold, and the pillars of Monticello are visible. While this 'wrong planchet' error is not as famous as the 1943-dated copper Cent, it may be even more desirable as far fewer are known. Breen wrote in his 1988 Encyclopedia "Extremely rare...at least 4 authenticated to date." This coin would make a spectacular addition to even the most advanced specialized collection of Jefferson Nickels. It was the subject of a cover story in the August 6, 2002 issue of Numismatic News, and was found by Carter Collins while sorting through wartime alloy Nickels.
