<B>1944-D 1C --Struck on a 1943 Zinc-Coated Steel Cent Planchet--AU50 ANACS.</B></I> The mintmarked 1944 steel cents are exponentially rarer than the P-mint pieces. These pieces are, of course, the lesser-known relatives of the 1943 copper cents. Lange's <I>The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents</B></I> (2005) notes that 1944-D steel cents are rare in all grades, although none have graded less than XF, adding that "As of January, 1996 ... NGC had certified two as MS62 and one as MS63. ANACS had certified one as AU50, one as AU55 and three for authentication alone. PCGS does not certify off-metal coins. ... Since the Denver Mint did not strike any two-franc coins for Belgium, all of the 1944-D steel cents must have resulted from steel planchets adhering to the inside of tote bins during 1943 and being struck during 1944."
