Unaffected areas display satin luster. Just as the 1943 copper cents have captured the imagination of collectors, 1944 steel cents have likewise found their way into major Lincoln cent collections. After the one-year experiment with zinc-coated steel cents in 1943, 25 million planchets were left over in the Philadelphia Mint. David Lange had only traced 27 P-mint steel cents at the time of the publication of his book on the series in 1996.
