1943-P 5C Jefferson Nickel--Struck on a Curacao or Sur
1943-P<5C> Jefferson Nickel--Struck on a Curacao or Suriname Planchet--MS64 PCGS. Curacao and Suriname were Netherlands colonies in 1943. The Netherlands was occupied by Germany during World War II, but the Allies controlled the Netherlands' South American colonies. The present piece appears to be struck on a Curacao 25 cents planchet, which is 3.58 grams and has a 0.640 fineness silver alloy. The lustrous surfaces display light dappled tan-gold toning, and are free from consequential contact. The centers are somewhat soft and the peripheral legends also become faint near the rim, as expected for this error type. Due to the variety of world coins struck at the U.S. Mint during World War II, an impressive collection could be formed from various wrong planchet coinage from this important era. The current lot would be an auspicious beginning for such a collection.
