1942 Ty Cobb Handwritten Signed Letter. The greatest diamond star of the twentieth century's first two decades pens a three-page note to a Ft. Worth, Texas sportswriter to set the record straight on a player he had once managed with the Detroit Tigers. This lengthy correspondence is replete with facts and figures relating to both the Texas and American League, with Cobb taking great care to correct the reporter's statistical analyses. He also defends his managerial style, writing, "As to what am supposed to have said to Tavener, I had a hard time breaking in, no man can truthfully say I ever offered a discouraging word or failed to at all times to encourage and attempt to inspire and my time was never so taken up that I could not try to help or advise or work with a young player and the record of young players coming up under my management between years of 1921 to 26 inclusive and their making good, any criticism of me or methods are out of line and needs no defense when you review the list & numbers..." Cobb's favored green ink remains bold through two and a half of the three pages, fading slightly at the close of the letter, but certainly not so much as to affect legibility. Cobb's closing signature remains a perfectly acceptable 8/10. A few scattered spots on the final appear to be the result of tape stains. Also here is the original mailing envelope, also written in Cobb's hand (though return address is preprinted). Collectors know that Cobb letters with good baseball content are particularly tough and desirable, and this certainly fits that bill. Letter has original mailing folds, with no fold line separation. LOA from PSA/DNA.
