<B>1942 "The Pride of the Yankees" Document Archive.</B></I> The heartbreaking tale of the end of Lou Gehrig's career and life starring Gary Cooper as the tragic Hall of Famer is near the top of most lists of best sports films. Here we offer an intriguing assortment of official documents relating to that unforgettable motion picture. 1) Director Sam Wood's 1941 contract with Samuel Goldwyn Inc. with text including, "it is agreed that the photoplay in connection with which you will render your services for us during said employment period shall be our photoplay to be based upon the life of Lou Gehrig." 2) Three pages of documents regarding technical issues of advertising, editing and release of the film, with two pages signed by Hollywood's Production code enforcer Joseph Breen, a major figure in keeping the town communist-free during the McCarthy era. 3) Eleanor Gehrig signed release giving her permission to make the film. 4) Eleanor Gehrig signed approval of a script for a television program entitled "The Lou Gehrig Story" in 1956. 5) 1962 threatening letter to Mrs. Gehrig from Samuel Goldwyn Productions, warning her that she may be in violation of her exclusivity agreement for cooperating in another Lou Gehrig project. Signed by studio lawyer. 6) Two Christy Walsh signed agreements (dated September 1941 and January 1942) giving his consent to the script of "The Pride of the Yankees." 7) Frank "Lefty" O'Doul's signed contract for his appearance in the film, dated January 6, 1942.
