Interesting typed letter signed by Claude Gillette, Admiral of the Navy Shipyard at Pearl Harbor on ''Navy Department Bureau of Ships'' letterhead, dated 22 September 1942. Written almost a year after the deadly attack on Pearl Harbor, here Gillette recounts the damage of the U.S.S. California. Addressed to Captain Joel Bunkley of the U.S. Navy, letter reads in part: ''I, of course, inspected the CALIFORNIA after she was raised and entered the dry-dock...she had sustained underwater damage at four main points...One torpedo hit slightly abaft the bridge about opposite the stack; this damage was very severe...'' Signed ''Claude Gillette'', letter on two pages measures 8'' x 10.5'' with two holes punched at top of each. Some minor toning and folds, else very good condition.
