1942/1-D 10C MS65 Full Bands PCGS. The earliest mention of the '42/1-D Dime in a numismatic publication came in the form of a letter to the editor in the November 1960 issue of The Numismatic Scrapbook. This overdate was mentioned in a few subsequent sources, but its existence remained largely unknown to non-specialists until the early 1970s. At that time, the 1942/1-D Dime made its debut in the Guide Book. One can surmise that the considerable amount of time that passed between this variety's creation and its widespread popularity among collectors led to the majority of the coins acquiring wear from some length of time spent in circulation. Indeed, Lange (1993) opines that Mint State survivors are "especially" rare. This is one of the most aesthetically desirable '42/1-D Dimes that this cataloger has seen. Whisper of delicate gold and powder-blue iridescence are evident as the coin rotates under the light, with this type of handling also drawing forth radiant cartwheel luster effects. One would be hard pressed to find more than one or two trivial abrasions, and the fully brought up features possess the eye appeal, if not the technical quality, of an even higher grade. Certainly among the highlights of our Mercury Dime offerings in this important sale. Population: 17 in 65 Full Bands, 7 finer (10/02).From the St. Louis Collection.
