1942/1<10C> MS66 Full Bands NGC. FS-010.7. One of the finest examples of this overdate to survive, and a very rare coin indeed. The overdate feature is extremely sharp, and this feature is clear to the unaided eye. The obverse is toned with a light blush of haze which tends toward gold in color, and we note a few minor flecks of medium gold toning on the upper obverse. On the reverse we note a matching faint haze which has a similar appearance to the toning found on proof silver coins of this era. The strike is quite sharp, with the central bands fully split on the reverse and all devices crisply defined. The only striking weakness present is located at the top of the E of LIBERTY on the obverse, and on the reverse on the base of the E in ONE and at the tops of a few letters in the legend. There are a couple of tiny ticks on Liberty's neck and truncation, a trivial luster disturbance close to the L on the obverse, and an inconsequential field nick below CA in AMERICA. These minutia are enumerated in detail for future identification of this very important rarity, and of course are in no way problematic for the grade. Years of searching have yielded precious few specimens of this overdate, most are worn from years in circulation, as no one was setting these aside at the time of issue with World War II just getting started, and this overdate was not widely publicized until much later after most coins had seen years of service in circulation. Hence any mint state coins surviving were simply a matter of chance, and this particular coin is absolutely one of the very finest known, and tied with a small cluster at this lofty grade level. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show a total of eight pieces graded this high, and importantly, none are graded higher.
