1942/1 10C MS65 PCGS
1942/1 10C MS65 PCGS. The 1942/1 Philadelphia dime was identified early on after production, unlike its 1942/1 cousin from Denver, that apparently was not even reported until about two decades later. In a November 28, 2005 Coin World article "Overdate Dimes of 1942," Eric von Klinger says the first published report of the 1942/1 Philadelphia issue apparently occurred in the March 1943 issue of the Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, where Arnold Cohn of Kingston, NY wrote:

"Recently I came across a 1942 dime (I look at every coin I touch) that would pass as brilliant uncirculated and on close examination it turned out to be a 1942 over 1941. Have you heard or seen anything of this dime or can you tell me where I might get some information about it?"

Von Klinger goes on to say: "Soon, a large part of the whole population of the country knew about the overdate and was inspecting any new dime."

This Gem specimen exhibits clearly the underdigit 1, as well as the typically seen doubling on the 4. Both sides are awash in glowing luster covered with a thin coat of delicate powder-blue and tan-beige patina. A penetrating strike emboldens the design elements, and the middle bands show a fair amount of separation. Close inspection reveals no mentionable marks. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder. Population: 7 in 65, 1 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
