1942/1 10C MS65 Full Bands PCGS. This perennially popular 20th century error was first reported by Arnold Cohn of Kingston, New York in the March 1943 issue of The Numismatic Scrapbook. This represents a very quick discovery for an error coin, and one might be tempted to think that the '42/1-P is common in the higher grades. It is, at least in the higher circulated grades. Most AU quality survivors were retrieved in and around New York City after the aforementioned edition of the Scrapbook alerted collectors. This issue has never been common in Mint State, however. The few Uncirculated coins extant were probably retrieved from rolls that were set aside as containing regular 1942-P Dimes. Having cataloged several PCGS Registry Sets of Mercury Dimes over the last couple of years, the present writer has probably seen more Gem Full Bands 1942/1 examples than most other numismatists. Still, the error is not common at that level of preservation with just 10 MS65 Full Bands coins at PCGS and 4 finer (1/03). Devoid of both toning and distracting bagmarks, the present example is bright with softly frosted luster. Fully struck with a few stray die polish lines (as produced) in the fields. From the Jay Eisenberg Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
