1942/1<10C> AU55 NGC. An attractive example of this popular overdate variety, listed as FS-010.7 in the Fivaz-Stanton reference book; the citation is mentioned on the NGC label. Delicate golden gray toning. Much original mint luster can still be seen around the letters, numerals, and central motifs. The overdate feature shows bold definition. Softness at the highpoints is noted, but it is not clear whether this is due to striking quality or wear. The story behind the 1942/41 overdate is well known, but bears repeating. In the later part of 1941 the die manufacturing department at the Philadelphia Mint continued to make 1941-dated obverse dies for the current coinage, but also prepared 1942-dated dies so that coinage could commence without delay at the beginning of the new calendar year. Evidently, when the overdate die was made, the workers in the die department impressed a hub having one of the dates, removed the die from the press to be annealed (a process required to remove brittleness due to work hardening), and then after annealing, replaced the die back into the hubbing press to receive a second impression. Unbeknownst to them, they had made a mistake by using a hub with the other date. The result was a die that had both a 1 and a 2 in the position of the fourth digit.
