This amberina crackle glass candy bowl is not only beautiful, it represents a significant part of the history of handblown art glass in America. Most likely made by the Pilgrim Glass Company of Ceredo, West Virginia in the late 1940s, it is red and yellow, the signature amberina colors. It has ruffled sides.<p>

First patented in the US by Joseph Locke and Edward D. Libby in 1883, amberina glass is glass which shows a progression of shades from amber at the bottom to red at the top. As are some forms of ruby glass, amberina glass is made with a heat-sensitive form of colloidal gold which turns red at the right temperature. Once the temperature is reached, the glass artist allows the lower part (the resulting amber) to cool while reheating the top part (the resulting red) to retain the red by bringing more color out of the gold. The result is this progression of the amberina color.<p>

Crackle glass, as lovely as it is for collectors, was made originally to "save" a piece of glass in progress that showed cording or heavy lines and swirls that would detract from the perfection of the final product. Rather than throw away what was otherwise a wonderful piece of art glass, the artists simply devised methods for "crackling" the glass, or creating patterns of deliberate cracks that not only disguised the imperfection but added beauty. The results are the mesmerizing, brightly colored pieces we enjoy today.<p>
