Taylor, Smith, and Taylor was one of the original American porcelain companies and was considered one of America's premier potters from the 1930s to the mid-1950s. The company was first organized in 1899 and operated until 1981, chiefly in East Liverpool, Ohio. It made high quality porcelain and ceramics, which included ironstone and fine china and helped set America's tables with everything from dinnerware to servingware, including water pitchers and milk jugs. TS&T wares are known for their variety of colors, glazes and shapes as well as for high quality.
Here is a lovely example of a water jug in the Blue Crocus pattern, a stunning mix of blue and yellow flowers on an ivory background. The design, which resembles Southern Potteries' Blue Ridge designs, is free-hand decoration (hand-painted) underglaze technique, meaning that the decoration is made before the glaze is applied. The design is on both sides of the jug. Because of the free-hand approach, perfection in execution is not expected--there are a few tufts of color apart from the flowers themselves. This water jug is in excellent condition.
