1940 Sequoyah Indian School Pottery - Melba June, fabulous frog handled pitcher, deep brownish red color, bottom of pitcher is signed ''Melba June Sequoyah 1940'', school originated in 1871, originated as a boarding school operated by the Cherokee Nation, the school was founded in 1871 by the Cherokee National Council as the Cherokee Orphan Asylum to care for the numerous orphans who came out of the Civil War, the first building on the current site of the school was erected in 1875, it has undergone several name changes, including Cherokee Orphan Training School (prior to 1 October 1924), Sequoyah Orphan Training School, and Sequoyah Vocational School it was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1914 to 1985, when the Cherokee Nation again assumed its operation, measures approx. 4.5''H x 5.75''W
