1940 Production Springfield Armory M1 Garand Rifle
M1 Garand Rifle manufactured in August 1940. This is an early production M1 rifle that was manufactured during the first month of the modified "gas port" system. The rifle has a parkerized finish with walnut stock, handguard and forearm. The receiver heel is roll-stamped: "U.S. RIFLE/CALIBER .30 M1/ SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/ 57847". The rifle has the original barrel dated "S-A 8-40" on the right side of the chamber but apparently was arsenal overhauled during or immediately after WWII. The rifle has a WWII 'lock bar" rear sight, "SA-6" operating rod, stamped handguard band, rolled pin in the lower barrel and the lower receiver has a 'two-tone' finish indicating that the receiver had been hardened during over-haul for use with rifle grenade launcher cartridges. The portion of the barrel surrounding the gas port is not plated and the rifle has a single slotted gas cylinder plug and early gas cylinder with narrow front sight base and front sight seal, early trigger housing group and early pattern trigger guard. The stock has two steel repair pins in the bottom of the pistol grip. There is no visible inspection stamp on the left side of the stock. The bottom of the pistol grip is stamped with a rack number, "16". The inside of the pistol grip is stamped with a encircled "P" proof mark over stamped by a second "P" indicating overhaul or rebuild. The partial serial number "1242" is written in grease pencil on the inside of the barrel channel.

Very fine as arsenal overhauled. The barrel, receiver, operating rod and trigger housing group retain 95% of the arsenal parkerized finish. The gas cylinder has about 70% of the black painted finish. The receiver and barrel markings are sharp. The stock, forearm and handguard are in very good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The WWII manufacture M1907 russet leather sling is in very good condition. This is a very fine example of an early production 'gas port' M1 Garand Rifle in late WWII configuration.
