1939-D 50C Arkansas MS68 PCGS. The Arkansas Cente
1939-D<50C> Arkansas MS68 PCGS. The Arkansas Centennial Half Dollar marked the one hundredth anniversary of the admission of Arkansas into the Union. A total of 500,000 coins were authorized by the Act of May 14, 1934, of which 95,300 were minted. Of these, 9,600 were melted, leaving a net mintage of 85,700 pieces. The 1939 issue consisted of 2,100 pieces each produced by the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. These were marketed in sets that sold for $10 each, which were immediately bought up by speculators, causing an outcry by collectors. This ultimately helped to discredit the commemorative program. The present D-mint example displays lustrous surfaces that are visited by lime-green, yellow, crimson, lavender, and violet colors at the rim areas. The design elements are boldly struck, with even the intricately designed features on the reverse portraying sharp detail. The surfaces of this gorgeous specimen are impeccably preserved, revealing just a couple of barely noticeable small ticks.
