1939<50C> Arkansas MS66 PCGS. The Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints each produced 2,100 Arkansas half dollars in 1939, which were sold in sets at $10 apiece. These vanished almost immediately owing to the small mintage, with most sets going to speculators. Collectors and Arkansas residents protested the Arkansas Commission's marketing tactics, which contributed to the later discredit of commemorative halves. When Congress passed the Act of August 5, 1939, revoking all previous authority to manufacture commemorative coins under previous acts, the immediate occasion was indignation over the Arkansas 1939 sets, which enriched coin dealers and speculators. The current 1939 Philadelphia issue is nearly brilliant, displaying just a few faint speckles of gold color over lustrous surfaces, along with some lavender patina at the lower reverse border. The design features are boldly impressed, and the surfaces are devoid of significant abrasions.
