1939-45: Kriegsmarine life jacket taken from U-997 scuttled off the Irish coast

A kriegsmarine life jacket in original cloth holding bag with letter confirming that this jacket was taken from U-boat 997 at the end of the Second World War. U-997 entered service in September 1943 being commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Hans Lehmann who became one of the last Knight's Cross winners of the war whilst in command of this ship. Between 1943 and 1945 U-997 sank a Soviet patrol ship and a Soviet merchant ship before surrendering at Narvik, Norway on 9 May 1945. The U-boat was then moved to Lisahally, County Derry where it was scuttled as part of Operation Daylight on 13 December 1945 by Allied aircraft.
