1938-S 5C MS66 Full Steps PCGS. The nickels of 2006 and 2007 have an often-overlooked design modification. While the portrait of Jefferson is not Felix Schlag's, the reverse retains his Monticello design, and so the Mint has placed the initials "FS" to the right of the building, just below the place a mintmark would occupy on a pre-1965 nickel. This timely change stands in contrast to the lack of recognition given Schlag when this piece was struck in 1938; nothing on the coin identifies him as the designer.
The 1938-S is highly elusive with strong detail, and Nagengast's 2002 analysis projects that just 1 in 50 Gems is a Full Steps example. While the steps of this coin are soft, a trait common to all representatives of this issue, they are distinct. The satiny obverse has delicate champagne-tinged patina, while the reverse has lavender-blue toning at the top and bottom and a streak of yellow-green across the center. PCGS has graded only four finer Full Steps pieces (2/07).
From The Jazzy Jeff PCGS Registry Set #6 for Full Step Jefferson Nickels With Varieties, 1938-1964.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
