1938-S 5C MS66 Full Steps PCGS. Though the Buffalo nickel is a numismatic icon today, in 1938, the Treasury Department jilted the design by announcing an open competition to replace it. Of the 390 interpretations of Thomas Jefferson and Monticello submitted, the Felix Schlag designs won out. Although officials mandated a number of changes, the process was completed quickly enough that the first Jefferson nickels were coined in September.
This is an attractive first-year example, fully struck with glowing satiny luster and light olive-gray toning. There are two or three minuscule marks on the reverse representation of Monticello, and a spidery die crack along the top of the head, but these have a trivial impact on the overall eye appeal. Population: 40 in 66 Full Steps, 4 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
