1938 Lou Gehrig Signed Photograph to Earle Combs' Sons. While the Iron Horse's silver screen turn as a Montana cowboy in the 1938 film "Rawhide" suggested that Gehrig made the right career choice by favoring the Bronx over Hollywood, we still can't help but love the promotional photos of Gehrig in western gear that the movie spawned. This is the best that we've seen, originally acquired from a son of Lou's Hall of Fame Yankees teammate Earle Combs. The fantastic 9/10 black fountain pen inscription to Combs' kids, rendered in Gehrig's elegant script, reads, "To Earle, Charles & Donald, With my sincerest and best wishes always - Cordially, Lou Gehrig." The photo, with "Wide World Studio" stamping on verso, has weathered the decades exceptionally well, with any minor flaw well clear of the inscription and only particularly apparent upon close inspection. As our catalog imagery will attest, the overall visual appeal is nothing less than first rate. Photo measures 7x9.5" in size. Certainly one of the finest Gehrig signed photos to reach the auction block in recent months, and one with impeccable provenance. LOA from PSA/DNA.
