1938-D 5C MS68 PCGS. The impending change to the Jefferson nickel design, as well as announcements that Buffalo nickels would be struck only at Denver in 1938, led to widespread saving of the issue. Rumors abounded that the pieces would be rare, but as with most cases involving speculations of rarity, the coins proved to be common instead. The 1938-D is the most popular issue for type collectors today.
Of course, while this ubiquity applies to most grades, MS68 pieces remain condition rarities. This spectacular example offers pink and blue tints over the centers with golden patina over parts of the margins. Well-defined overall, though the bison's shoulder is a touch soft, with strong and lovely luster beneath the toning. Practically flawless and immensely desirable. Population: 8 in 68, 0 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
