1938-D 5C MS68 PCGS. In 1938 when the mandatory 25-year period for new coinage issues had expired, Treasury and Mint officials were eager to move to a new design, since the Buffalo nickel was impossibly difficult to strike up properly, and the series was plagued by die breaks. The mintage in 1938 was confined to the Denver Mint, and a rumor spread that those pieces were going to be valuable. Accordingly, collectors saved thousands of rolls of the issue. Fortunately for collectors, the issue was well produced, leading to the occasional availability of splendid, near-perfect examples such as the present piece.
Pale lilac color that predominates on both sides complements the lavish golden-orange hues that encircle the periphery, with deep rose near the devices. The strike is unfailingly sharp throughout, and only the most trivial signs of contact appear under a loupe. A lovely coin for aficionados of original toning. Population: 7 in 68, 0 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
