1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legs NGC MS64
The area of distribution for what is now regarded as one of the most recognized errors in Mint history seems to have been the state of Montana. According to David W. Lange (2000), the evidence for this comes from a letter dealer-collector Aubrey Bebee sent to the editor of the The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. Unlike such other varieties in the Buffalo Nickel series as the 1914/3, and the 1918-D overdate, the 1937-D 3-Legged was discovered almost immediately upon delivery. Since that time, this Mint error has been actively collected as an integral part of a complete Buffalo Nickel set.

While we typically see several circulated, and even a few lower-grade Mint State examples of the 3-Legged Nickel in our sales, seldom do we have the opportunity to present a billowing fresh Mint State 64. A few tiny marks on the cheek but with full, softly frosted luster and only a light blemishes to report, this is just such a coin. Both sides are overlaid in the lightest gold toning iridescence that enhances already steady eye appeal. The strike is pleasing to bold over most features save perhaps for the highpoints of the buffalo's shoulder on the reverse. A coin most presentable, and one that would serve as a centerpiece in any specialized collection. (#3982)
