A mint-fresh coin with luster that practically defines this odd issue: Subtle golden-gray with hints of matte finish and other toning bring out the effect of a strike from heavily lapped dies. Most design details are present but no one can call this "bold."
This die-polishing variety was the first of its kind to capture the imagination of collectors. Discovered soon after its issue, 1937-D 3-leg nickels were advertised for sale in an ad in <I>The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine<I> as early as 1937-38. The 3-legged buffalo variety was caused when the foreleg of the bison was removed accidentally by excessive polishing of the dies to remove clash marks.
