1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS66 NGC. FS-020.2. One of the best-known variety issues in all of 20th century numismatics, the 1937-D Three-Legged gained almost instant notoriety when, in 1937-1938, C. L. "Cowboy" Franzen started offering examples for sale in The Numismatic Scrapbook. Franzen's coins probably came from Montana, the state in which most, if not all '37-D Three-Legged Nickels were distributed. The early discovery date would seem to indicate that most examples were removed from circulation after a relatively short period of time. Those that did escape circulation altogether nearly always display inferior luster and striking qualities. While a trifle mushy on the highpoints, the radiant luster of this dazzling Premium Gem almost defies any preconceptions one might have about the issue. A few scattered freckles of carbon seem to be all that separates this piece from an even loftier grade level. Population: 13 in 66, 1 finer (1/05). Lot:6044
