1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 PCGS. Two opposing factors make Gems such as this available, yet very scarce. As with the 1942/1 dime, collector awareness of the variety was almost immediate. David Lange (2006) reports that the "variety was evidently discovered by, or at least first publicized by, C.L. 'Cowboy' Franzen. He was advertising them for sale in The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine as early as 1937-1938."
On the other hand, the state of Montana, where most examples were distributed initially, had few dedicated collectors, and not many well-preserved Mint State examples are known today. One such piece is offered here. The surfaces have soft, pleasing luster beneath a wash of gold. Aside from the diagnostic weakness and die erosion, the overall level of detail is solid, and the surfaces are clean. An excellent choice for a high-grade set of Buffalo nickel varieties.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
