1937-D<5C> Three-Legged MS65 NGC. Here is one of the most popular mint errors from the Twentieth century. The condition of this coin is remarkable as so few were saved from the time of issue, and obtaining a Gem specimen is quite a challenge for any numismatist. Satiny luster resides in the fields, and the strike is rather strong for this issue. A faint blush of gold is noted over the surfaces. Close examination will locate a couple of very minute specks, two inside the feather on the obverse in the Chief's hair, another in the upper reverse field left of the P in PLURIBUS.
This curious error was created when the reverse die was lapped down to removed clash marks. Apparently a bit too much steel was taken off the die, including the forward leg of the bison. This slight was not noticed, and the die continued to coin more nickels. There is also a curious arc of die lumps which extend under the belly of the bison, as seen on all Three-Legged coins of this year, and these are the die diagnostics used to confirm this variety. An exceptional coin for the specialist, and one of the finer graded examples. Population: 37 in 65, 15 finer (8/05).
