1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 NGC. FS-020.2. The 1937-D Three-Legged has been the most popular error in the Buffalo Nickel virtually since the time of issue. In 1937-1938, C. L. "Cowboy" Franzen started offering examples for sale in The Numismatic Scrapbook. Franzen's coins probably came from Montana, the state in which most, if not all '37-D Three-Legged Nickels were distributed. The early discovery date would seem to indicate that most examples were removed from circulation after a short period of time. This appears to be what happened, and, as anyone who studies our catalogs will see, the error is relatively plentiful in VF, XF, and AU. Mint State examples, however, are scarce, and Gems are downright rare. Undoubtedly among the finest certified survivors of this desirable 20th century error Nickel, this coin is awash in full, frosty textured luster. The surfaces are mostly tan-gray in sheen, but one can see isolated crescents of orange tinting at the borders that are most readily evident over the left reverse. The surfaces, nonetheless, are pleasingly bright with no abrasions that would impede one's appreciation of either the luster or striking quality. The latter is overall bold, this despite the presence of metal flow lines (as struck) that are indicative of die erosion.
