1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS65 NGC. An important part of
1937-D<5C> Three-Legged MS65 NGC. An important part of any Buffalo nickel collection is the popular and intriguing 1937-D Three-Legged variety, created when a Mint workman was refinishing a reverse die to remove clash marks. Clash marks occurred when the obverse and reverse dies literally struck each other without an intervening planchet. When the clashing accident took place, one of the dies (and sometimes both dies) would pick up parts of the design details from the opposing die. After that, every coin struck from the clashed dies would show these additional, unwanted details. During their lifetime, these dies would be removed from the press for refinishing, sometimes called lapping or polishing. The process would remove a microscopically thin layer of the die surface, just enough to eliminate the clash marks. Of course, a slight loss of design details also occurred. If the repolishing was carried even slightly too far, the loss of design details would be clearly visible. That is precisely what happened here, where the repolishing process removed the bison's front leg, one of the shallowest points in the reverse die.
This example is a remarkable Gem, approaching the finest in existence. Both sides have fully lustrous and frosty gray surfaces with pale gold, blue, and lilac color on each side, including a rainbow presentation near the border. Census: 41 in 65, 15 finer (6/06).
