1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS. This
1937-D<5C> Three-Legged MS64 PCGS. This is a splendid example of the ever-popular Three-Legged Buffalo nickel, created by an overzealous Mint workman. This variety started out in a simple clashed dies situation, until the Mint workman started removing the clash marks on the reverse die. He got a little too involved in his work, and removed certain shallow design features as well. This is the reason that the bison's front right leg is missing, and also why the animal is actually a little smaller, as evidenced by the space between the back and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This latter feature is one of the standard authentication points for this variety.
The present example, a Choice Mint State coin, has lovely gold and iridescent toning near the borders, surrounding light blue-gray color at the centers. The surfaces are fully lustrous and frosty. An exceptional coin for the grade, one that will surely delight the connoisseur.
