1937-D<5C> Three-Legged MS64 NGC. FS-020.2. One of the most popular coins of the entire Buffalo nickel series and despite a rather steady supply of these that cross the auction block, they never go out of style. The surfaces here are far better than normally encountered, with faint rose-gold toning and ample luster. A couple of minor nicks are found on the bison, tucked into his wooly coat. The strike is as full and complete as the dies allowed, although there is a touch of softness on the tops of ED STATES. No carbon spots or similar problems are seen.
This variety came about after die clashing was noticed during the coining process. An experienced engraver would take the dies off the coining press and file down the fields lightly, which would remove the clashmarks from the fields, and also weaken the depth of the devices slightly. In the present case, the dies were lapped too much, and portions of the devices were removed, including the forward leg of the bison. The rear legs were also weakened in this process, making them appear feeble. Other die features are present, and these all combine to make the Three-Legged Buffalo one of the most highly desirable coins from the 20th Century.
