1937-D<5C> Three-Legged MS64 NGC. FS-020.2. A famous and ever-popular die variety, resulting from overzealous die polishing by a Mint employee. The detail of one of the Buffalo's front legs was obscured, hence the nickname "Three-Legged." Mint State pieces are highly sought after by collectors, as most of the known examples were released into circulation. This near-Gem is one of the best-preserved pieces that this cataloger has ever seen. Both sides seem entirely free of even small marks or blemishes of any kind. The striking details are bold and even, and the coin displays a pleasing blend of gold and pastel olive patina. The luster is just a bit weak, perhaps preventing an even loftier grade assessment.
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
