1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS63 NGC. This coin is toned with mottled light gold with a streak along the Indian's jaw. There are a couple of minor spots in the color below the jaw, and along the reverse edge. The strike is fairly sharp for this issue, with the horn clear on the bison, and the all important missing leg above the forlorn disconnected hoof on the ground below. The hind legs of the bison have characteristic weakness, and this feature is seen on all known examples of this popular die state. Borne out of a common coining problem, clashed dies, where the dies strike each other without a planchet between them, causing portions of the design elements to appear on the opposing die. These clash marks are filed off the dies, in this particular case, the clash marks were filed off, and the leg of the bison was also removed creating this ever-popular variety. Always in strong collector demand. Population: 212 in 63, 208 finer (2/05).
