1937-D 50C Oregon MS68 PCGS. While the large numbe
1937-D 50C Oregon MS68 PCGS. While the large number of varieties makes it an interesting issue today, the Oregon Trail commemorative half dollar is one of those issues that was originally abused by the promoter, in this case the Oregon Trail Memorial Association. Ezra Meeker explored the Oregon territory in 1851, and the first issue of this commemorative half dollar, in 1926, marked the 75th anniversary of his travels. Meeker was actually named president of the Association, although this was most likely an honorary position than an acting position as he was 96 years old in 1926. The issue continued with more emissions for several years, eventually totaling 14 different issues from all three mints, coined between 1926 and 1939.
This 1937-D issue was the only Oregon Half Dollar of the year, with a mintage of 12,000 coins. This amazing example is a top-quality coin. In fact, PCGS has certified just one finer MS69 example. The surfaces have fully frosty silver luster beneath radiant orange, yellow, green, blue, gold, and lilac color. Both sides have the toning blended into a kaleidoscope of color. Population: 35 in 68, 1 finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4172
