1936-S 50C Cincinnati MS67 PCGS. Ex: JFS Collection. The tiny mintages of the three Cincinnati issues amounted to just over 5,000 pieces each, all delivered into the hands of a single speculator, who also happened to be the distributor. The story of Thomas G. Melish, promoter extraordinaire, provided fodder for opponents of commemorative coinage, and many Mint policies that guide the work of the Mint and its advisory bodies derive from reactions to Melish's abuses.
Though the Cincinnati coins encountered rough treatment at the various mints, a few escaped unscathed. A Heritage cataloger who described this coin in August 2004 focused on this coin's delightful colors, the "appealing pastels near the obverse borders, and luscious, vivid orange, yellow, olive, and crimson iridescence near the reverse peripheries." The silver-white centers shine, and the well-defined devices and nearby fields are surprisingly clean. NGC and PCGS have graded just one coin apiece at this level, with none finer at either service (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
