1936-S 50C Bay Bridge MS68 PCGS. The opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to traffic (November 12-14, 1936) is the occasion that this Half Dollar commemorates. The San Francisco Mint produced 100,000 examples for sale to collectors and an additional 55 pieces for the U.S. Assay Commission. Most of the former were distributed through the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Celebration and the San Francisco Citizen's Celebration committees, but additional coins were sold at kiosks near the toll plazas! The net mintage of this issue after 28,631 pieces were melted as unsold in 1937 is 71,424 coins. While not one of the rarest silver Commems in an absolute sense, the '36-S Bay Bridge has a low certified population in MS67 at the two major grading services. This PCGS-encapsulated example is one of the seven finest representatives on that company's October 2002 Population Report, and it is a fully frosted and beautifully toned survivor. Rich orange-red toning hugs the right rims with some dappled golden-orange shadings over the balance of the reverse. The strike is as full as one should expect for the type, and the surfaces have survived with little, if any evidence of coin-to-coin contact. We last offered a similarly graded Bay Bridge Half as lot 5052 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale. That coin was part of a specialized Commemorative collection, and it sold for a record setting $15,525.Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Superior, 5/1996), lot 1482.From the St. Louis Collection.
