1936 OLYMPICS CRUISE LINE MENU HOHLWEIN
Original 1936 Olympic Games cruise line dinner menu for the tourist class of the S.S. Columbus, Sunday, May 31st, 1936. Menus were made for the 'Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen' cruise line, 2 pages, 11 x 7.5 inches. Cover illustration was made by famed German poster artist Ludwig Hohlwein. During WWII, the British naval forces hunted for enemy ships and on the trip back from Havana, the U.S.S. Columbus was spotted by American and British forces. So as not to engage in a naval battle with British forces, the ship was scuttled and sank 400 miles off the coast of Virginia. In 1941, Hitler named the loss of the Columbus as one of his reasons for war on the United States.
