1936-D 50C Rhode Island MS68 NGC. As the old saying goes, "it takes one to know one," and some of the most fascinating commentary on the misdeeds of the Rhode Island distributors came from L.W. Hoffecker, the slippery Texas dealer who masterminded the distribution of two previous issues, the Spanish Trail and Elgin halves. Hoffecker's acerbic correspondence with Walter Nichols, reproduced extensively in Bowers (1991), offers remarkable insight into the machinations and politics of the commemorative game.
Forest-green, orange-gold, and magenta patina graces the obverse periphery of this delightful half, one of just 15,010 examples coined, while the centers and most of the reverse are pale silver-gray. The carefully preserved surfaces display an attractive sheen that compounds the already-considerable eye appeal. NGC has certified two pieces in MS68 and one MS68 S, while PCGS has graded none at this lofty level (4/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
