1936 5C Type One--Satin Finish PR68 PCGS. A breathtaking Satin Finish proof that is, as far as we can tell, technically perfect. The coin may as well have been graded Proof 69 for that matter, if one were to consider surface preservation of high grade coins as the primary determinant of a coin's grade. However, in the upper grades eye appeal is also a consideration and this piece certainly does not lack that either. Toned in gripping shades of bright multicolored "oil-slick" iridescence, both sides are well matched to each other. The beautiful patination is complemented by the razor-sharp strike details, with no mentionable weakness on any of the design elements.
Breen, commenting on the type one 1936 satin finish proof nickels vs. the type two brilliant ones in his Encyclopedia, contends that the type one proofs resulted from Mint personnel having forgotten the former proofing techniques in the ensuing two decades. The first ones of 1936 (like the proof cents of that year) are of a satin finish. Later or second-style 1936's are very brilliant, like the 1937's, even on the devices.
