1936 5C Type One--Satin Finish PR66 NGC. Some of the 4,420 proof Buffalo Nickels delivered in 1936 display a satin finish--the final coins in the series to do so. While Lange (2000) states that survivors of both the satin and brilliant deliveries are virtually identical in rarity, Breen once opined that the former were more elusive due to poor reception by contemporary collectors. Regardless of which opinion is correct, the present Gem should be of obvious importance to the numerous numismatists in today's hobby who are assembling complete business strike and proof sets of Buffalo Nickels. The otherwise ice-blue surfaces display golden-orange toning toward the borders that is much more extensive on the obverse. That side also exhibits a blush of orange-tan iridescence over the Indian's face. The bright, satiny surfaces are expectantly free of bothersome handling marks for the assigned grade. We do, however, note a few spots that are most readily evident in the lower left reverse field and on the obverse over and before the Indian's jaw. From an East Coast cabinet.
